GJA opens Chapter at AUCC

12/07/2018

Accra, Dec. 4, GNA - The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has inaugurated a chapter at the Africa University College of Communications (AUCC) to enable students to understand and appreciate the aims and objectives of the Association.

The inaugural ceremony was organised by the Ama Ata Aidoo Centre for Creative Writing of the AUCC.

Mr Kofi Yeboah, the General Secretary of the GJA said the Chapter was established to get students on board as members of the association so that by the time they finish their courses, they would have understood and appreciated the aims and objectives of the GJA, as they roll into mainstream journalism practice.

He said, the constitution of the GJA, specifically article 4(e), provided for students membership, so students of various communication institutions could become members of the Association.

Mr Yeboah said, the effectiveness of the chapter in the school would depend on how well the executives of the student's chapter work and the kind of good support the will give to them.

He said the GJA, as a professional body, had roles to play towards the effectiveness of the chapter.

"We are going to keep in touch with the chapter and provide the necessary support so that it will be very effective and be able to achieve the aims and objectives for which it has established", he said.

Mr Samuel Darfour, President of the Students Representative Council (SRC) said the council was ready to help and assist the chapter to achieve professional standards to promote and defend press freedom.

He said "it was important for journalists in Ghana to revisit the old notes, dust them off and incorporate into them the key thing that makes journalists the fourth arm of government in the country."

He urged members of the chapter to be mindful of the obligations of a journalist to be truthful and loyal to the citizens and also have the discipline to verify, to be independent and provide room for public criticism.
